For many groups, carving out the space to dream doesn’t involve purchasing their home.

Through projects like 447 Minna, CAST removes the pressure and responsibilities of ownership so artists and residents can focus on what matters most—their practice and being in community.

447 Minna was developed by CAST to help fill the gap in the lack of affordable, accessible spaces for arts and culture in San Francisco and the South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood. Given SoMa’s long history of displacement, specifically in the Filipino community, coupled with the increasingly expensive real estate prices of the Bay Area, CAST saw a role to play—create a community gathering space promoting arts and culture to build connection and inclusion.

We provide the “container” for which artists, cultural workers, and the community can use to activate and create engaging experiences.

ACTIVATION THROUGH COLLABORATION

When it comes to production needs for exhibition support, workshops, or community activities, securing an affordable space is often the biggest hurdle, but by no means the only challenge.

We help you handle the hassle of logistics. Renting 447 Minna’s flexible, inclusive spaces is affordable thanks to the generous support of #StartSmall and First Republic Foundation. This means you can focus your budget on things that matter most for your exhibition, workshop, performance or whatever experience you or your organization may be dreaming up, instead of designating those expenses to securing space.

Among the ways we collaborate, we can provide:

Space sponsorship providing a rental subsidy to lower costs even further from our below-market rates
Production support through our state-of-the-art audio/visual equipment
Knowledge-building with the expertise of our event staff to help navigate the advanced tech features in our theater and conference room

Our commitment to supporting a wide range of community organizations means lowering barriers of access that may be encountered in traditional institutions. We want artists, arts and cultural organizations, and community residents to feel welcome to experiment and take risks in their activation at 447 Minna.

Co-Create with CAST

Network with other arts groups and explore collaborative models

From hosting performances to community events, we offer affordable, fully ADA accessible spaces at 447 Minna for individuals and organizations to rent to develop and present their work. Partner with our team and network with other arts groups in the building to explore collaborative models for generating income, organizing pop-ups to share art, and gain new production skills with an accessible A/V system for no-fuss presentations.

The Mayor’s Youth Employment & Education Program (MYEEP) used our Black Box theater as a collaborative learning space for their summer youth workshop.

Subsidizing Space

Space Rentals

Reserve up to 1,700 square feet of event space, including a black box theater, state-of-the-art conference room, and open-concept box office.

Large enough to seat 54 people (99 standing), the black box theater at 447 Minna is a multi-use gathering, presentation, and performance space with a separate control room equipped for live streaming or carrying out the most technical of performances.
