A cultural project dedicated to preserving and showcasing the traditional Indigenous ritual dances of the Tagalog people.

Sunday, November 19, 2023
Cost: Free (Donation optional)

Prepare to be enthralled by the magic of “Maganito,” a captivating cultural project that brings to life the surviving Indigenous ritual dances of the Tagalog people. Join us in an extraordinary showcase of dance, rhythm, and tradition as we preserve and celebrate these ancient rituals that were once used for rain, healing, and worship. Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Tagalog heritage and experience the power and beauty of these sacred dances.

“Maganito” begins the possibility of a transmissible Tagalog neo-traditional spiritual and communal ritual combining spirituality with dance. In a post-colonial society such as the Philippines, glimmers of Indigenous practices remain within Catholicized folk practices. Using surviving practices learned from Southern Tagalog culture-bearers and recorded descriptions of Tagalog rituals by Spaniards, this performance will combine these with similar practices found across Philippine cultures to create not just a piece but a healing ritual.

About Jacob Dominguez

Kreative Growth Program resident artist Jacob Dominguez is a queer migrant and diasporic traditional Southeast Asian performing artist bridging transnational histories through cultural work. Their traditional learning spans both Philippine and Indonesian traditional movement and musical arts, learning directly from firsthand culture bearers of the region. Through cultural immersion with teachers in Southeast Asia and community work among the diasporic Filipinx community in the US, Jacob hopes to weave past and present towards a pre-Philippine and post-colonial Asian identity. Focusing on colonial resistance and empowerment through cultural work, they hope to share knowledge across Asia and the Asian diaspora.
