Vital Arts’ Bay Area Artist Census Fellowship

The Bay Area Artist Census Fellowship is an 18-month leadership opportunity created by Vital Arts to support equity, justice, and collective advocacy in the Bay Area’s arts ecosystem. This first-of-its-kind, artist-led initiative will gather data on the lived experiences of local artists to shape policies and secure the resources artists need to thrive. Vital Arts is seeking artists who are rooted in their communities and committed to equity and justice.

The fellowship will select seven artists, one from each of the six Bay Area counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Mateo, and Solano) plus one artist to serve in a regional leadership role, to lead the design and implementation of the Bay Area Artist Census (BAAC). Fellows will play key roles in outreach, data collection, storytelling, and advocacy, helping to amplify artists’ voices and influence systemic change across the region. Artists from historically marginalized communities, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, and low-income creatives, are especially encouraged to apply.

Fellows will receive a $1,000 monthly stipend and commit approximately 5 hours per week, including participation in a monthly workshop on the first Wednesday of each month from 4-6PM. Throughout the 18-month program, fellows will gain training in financial literacy, civic engagement, wellness, advocacy, and data analysis, and will receive mentorship and networking opportunities with peers and field leaders.
