GLBT Historical Society Secures Permanent Home for Museum and Archives in the Castro
GLBT Historical Society press announcement at 2280 Market Street, September 2024
The GLBT Historical Society has acquired a permanent home for the nation’s first full-scale LGBTQ history museum and archives at 2280 Market Street in San Francisco’s iconic Castro neighborhood. With $12.5 million from the City and $5.5 million from the State of California, this historic acquisition will transform the 22,330-square-foot site into a vibrant space celebrating LGBTQ history and culture. Once complete, the museum will house immersive exhibits, archives, a research center, and areas for community engagement, establishing a lasting cultural anchor in the heart of the Castro.
CAST plays a key role in this historic project, serving as a trusted partner and guide. In collaboration with the City, we will use our real estate expertise to help the GLBT Historical Society navigate this important transition. Our role includes managing the property during the City’s interim ownership, offering advice on building stewardship, and providing guidance to set the organization up for success as the eventual owner of the site.
We are honored and excited to build off the years of collaboration and efforts from the City, Community Vision, and Ventura Partners along with the GLBT Historical Society and the many LGBTQ+ leaders who have been advocating for this for decades. This is a critical step forward in safeguarding the stories and legacies of LGBTQ+ leaders and activists.
